Monet's 3D Waterlilies

I saw this on Pinterest and loved it! I don't know whom to give credit to.

DAY ONE:

We briefly discussed Monet and wrote his name in our Idea Books. I showed them some paintings of water lilies and we did a water lily sketch. Next we glued down strips of blue paper. I cut a bunch of different blues...

The trick to good waves is 3 dots of glue. One dot on each end of the strip, glue it down like a bridge and then one dot in the middle. 

Here's my teacher sample....can't wait to do the water lilies next class!

I had my 3rd graders make Mother's Day cards awhile back and I showed them how to make the waterlilies and they turned out really well! 

This was the lily pad that we decided would be a good card as is....they wrote a special message on the back. 

Spring Sub Plan: Ants in a Garden

I left this with my sub a couple of weeks ago and they turned out really well. The kids did a good job and she used it for K-3.

Imagine if you were an ant in a garden...what would the garden look like from your point of view?

As suggested in Patty's lesson, we looked at imagery from Bryce Canyon National Park and Arches National Park in Utah. Since we live in Tennessee, we are completely unfamiliar with this landscape so I thought it was a good opportunity to 'take a trip' in the art room.

Three Hoodoos

Hoodoos are tall skinny spires of rock that protrude from the bottom of arid basins and "broken" lands.

Day One:  Write about landscape and discuss foreground, middleground and background. Draw a sketch in "idea book" practicing making rock formations, either hoodoos or arches...or both. Also include desert plant life in sketch...aloe vera and/or prickly pear cactus plants. 

Transfer sketch (or favorite parts) to a large piece of brown construction paper, sulphite would be best! Include foreground with plant life, middleground with rock formation and background mountains or sky. 

I tried to keep this one pretty open-ended since it's the end of the year. They had the basics of what I wanted to see, and then 'designed' the rest...

Outline in black oil pastel and call it a day. 

Day Two : Adding Colors with Chalk Pastels

They are working on a 9"x18" paper and most kids got the coloring completed in one 60 min class period. I thought it would take 2 days at least, but they were able to work quickly with awesome results!
