Bleach Pen Art (Reverse Batik)

I'm loving this new technique. It's amazing and I can't wait to use it! I've been experimenting at home and so far I've tried black cotton fabric and purple canvas. The longer you leave the bleach on, obviously the lighter it gets.

Draw the image with bleach pen *(resembles puff paint)

let it sit for at least 5-10 minutes...you can see it bleaching

The simpler the better!

Rinse bleach out WELL and wash with soap

This turned into a natural brown....leaving it on longer would make it lighter

here's my apron (planning on adding more!)

here's a stencil sticker that turned out a little fuzzy

A Rainbow of Faces

Monochromatic Self-Portraits!

For our first project, I've decided to test the waters and do a pre-assessment project with a self-portrait drawing. Each student 1st - 4th grade is 'showing me what they know' by drawing their self-portrait. This has been a great first mini-project for sprucing up the empty hallways...especially for open house tomorrow night!

Basically, they draw in pencil first, choose ONE color for their face, outline with a marker and then fill in the white space with a crayon. We discussed how different values can be achieved with the crayons using soft or hard pressure for lights and darks. And, for most classes we've learned what 'monochromatic' means.

Enjoy our Rainbow of Faces!

Welcome Back!

Well, it's a new school year and I'm really excited to be at Dupont Elementary! (again) I started my metro career at Dupont as an interim art teacher and I was so sad to leave. Now, I am so happy to return and I can't wait to meet my new students.

Your student will need:

an ART SHIRT.......................any old over-sized t-shirt......make sure there's nothing inappropriate on it!

I'll be sending out a parent newsletter with all kinds of wonderful information next week.

Check out the blog each week for new updates and pictures of what we're doing in ART!

2nd Grade: Morris Louis"Drips"

Well, I decided to do this at the last minute today because I keep  getting bored! Anyway, we looked at the Color Field painter, Louis Morris. We talked about abstract art in our idea books and began the drips!
Morris Louis "Where" 1960

Our plan is to use these drips as flower stems and centers...we'll add a collage vase and petals next week!

Dali's Long-Legged Elephants (Fourth Graders)

I can't remember where I saw this wonderful lesson, but I borrowed it nonetheless! We read the story "Dali and the Path of Dreams", which is so creative and interesting, and created a word web in our Idea Books about SURREALISM. Then, we did a guided-echo drawing of an elephant.

The students outlined the elephants with a brown or black washable marker. Then we used water to paint over the elephant. This creates nice value! Once the elephants were "smeared" then we painted backgrounds with tempera cakes (my new favorite paint because it's so easy to use!)

Finally, the best part.....we added fabric to the elephant for a shawl and headpiece to tie in a cultural reference to India and their use of elephants. Sequins were also a nice touch for 'jewels'.

Fabulous!

The shadow lines are a great extra something!

3rd Grade Analogous Aliens!

These are super fun and especially great at the end of the year. We used tempera cakes and straws to make these awesome blow paintings. The kids were encouraged to create an alien-like blob. The next class, we added eyes and accessories to our aliens and tried to give them some personality.
