Yarn Weavings

I do this weaving project each year with the 2nd graders. It is the building block for the CD weavings when they are in 3rd grade…and then finally leading up to stitching their initials on burlap once they are in 4th.

We use large metal embroidery needles. If a student is really struggling with the needle, I just let them use their fingers. The needle comes in handy on those longer looms with more wefts strings.

More photos coming soon…

3rd Grade’s Weaving on CDs

This may be my 3rd year teaching this…and each year we make it a little bit better each time. (I think so anyways..) Here are some photos of works in progress. We are definitely displaying these for our Pop Art and Structures themed art show February 20…

“Ants at a Picnic” Weaving Project

This is a 3-day project for 2nd graders.

Day One:

For this mixed media project, we started by weaving the ‘tablecloth’. I had pre-cut strips of white paper and the kids cut their own looms from the red paper.

Day Two:

We talked about healthy foods vs. junk foods and drew some of our favorite foods. They drew with a black crayon on half-sheets of white paper. Here’s where the fun starts…we started by adding color with oil pastel, then we used BABY OIL with q-tips to blend the colors. These look awesome!

Day Three:

We cut out our food, made a plate by tracing a butter lid on black paper and put everything together.

They created a 3-D drink (with a straw!) and silverware.

Optional: Adding black ants crawling all over their picnic.

The easy way….Baby oil in trays on each table with q-tips. The kids are pretty good about keeping their hands clean and keeping oil off the table.

Here’s some of our finished products…but I don’t want to give too much away since these masterpieces are going in our art show!

Navajo Rug Collage (2nd Grade)

I searched far and wide for a lesson plan online of a Navajo inspired collage....couldn't find anything. I didn't want to close out the weavings without really discussing where weaving essentially comes from. So I showed several images of Navajo weavings and we talked about symmetry, geometric shapes, patterns and contrast.
I love what the kids came up with for their "symmetrically balanced Navajo rug collages".

Weaving Unit

We began this during our 2nd 9 weeks for the Weaving requirement in the curriculum. I haven't really tried the fabric strips with 2nd grade yet...I've always started them on yarn...which helps me out 2 years later when they create an  embroidered monogram...this experience with threading needles and tying knots is so valuable!

Anyway, they created these on cardboard looms using yarn and plastic needles. We took about 4-5 class periods to complete these. I found a large loom in the art closet and decided it would be awesome to have a collaborative weaving they could work on for our art show. Can't wait till the big one gets finished!

Weaving on a CD Loom with 3rd Grade

So far, I'm loving this idea from pinterest! It's taken awhile to get everything ready and explained, but I think everyone is getting the hang of it and the cds are looking awesome!

2nd Grade Yarn Weavings

Here is the beginning of our weaving on a loom project. So far, so good!

Here's our star weaver! He did all this in one class...
