Self Portraits Across the Board

We are all starting back with self-portrait projects....except Kinders...they'll get there after we discuss lines and shapes.

A Variety of Self-Portrait Projects for the Beginning of the Year...1st - 4th grade....

Below is a 2nd grader's self-portrait....day one. I'll take some more pics this week of our works in progress.

I got my mirrors out...and discovered I need lots more of them!

Literature /Art Connection for 2nd Grade

 

This is a yearly project I do with 2nd grade at the beginning of the year. We use oil pastels and watercolors and tempera paint. They always turn out so fun and vibrant!

Day Three: Painting the Background

 

Mixing Shades

 

 

1st Grade Realistic Self-Portraits:

"The Colors of Us" by Karen Katz

Day Two: Painting Background

 

First we used texture plates to create an interesting background design, then we paint using tempera cakes.

4th Grade Realistic Self-Portraits

 

Day One: Draw in pencil and outline in sharpie.

I included an art challenge of an 'off-centered' selfie this year.

Day Two: Mixing your own skin tone.

 

I use the ladibug document camera to walk the kids through the steps of mixing skin tones. We start with peach and then we learn to make brown aka chocolate. 

 

Once they learn to make these two colors,  they can figure out how to create their skin tone... and I was pleasantly surprised at how well they captured their skin tones.

This is a fun experimental day...I try to stress that it's okay if it's not perfect. I also have backup pre-made skin tones if someone gets really discouraged. But usually I can help them mix the colors if they're really struggling...at which time I get to show off my magical skin tone mixing skills.
